As educators across the country prepare for another school year, they will have access to new resources to support the development of instructional materials grounded in their local academic standards and research about how students learn best.

OpenAI’s new K–12 Educator plugin connects to the Learning Commons Knowledge Graph, bringing local academic standards, learning components, and learning progressions into a tool educators increasingly use to plan and differentiate instruction. The Learning Commons Knowledge Graph connects trusted instructional content and learning science into a shared foundation, so ChatGPT for Teachers can generate more precise instructional content that reflects educational best practices.

This resource is available for district-managed ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers accounts. General ChatGPT users can also install the Learning Commons plugin directly with the same access. While Knowledge Graph provides the local academic standards, learning components, and learning progressions, it does not receive, view, or store any student information. 

The value of shared infrastructure

The announcement builds on the recent launch of Claude for Teachers — powered by the Learning Commons connector and co-developed Agent Skills for teaching.

Today, teachers use a wide variety of AI-powered tools, including general-purpose AI platforms like ChatGPT and Claude, as well as products developed for specific activities in the classroom. Learning Commons is now a trusted infrastructure layer for both. Our machine-readable educational datasets and tooling are open, public resources that support edtech developers and frontier models in building the next generation of AI‑powered instructional tools for the benefit of teachers and learners.

A shared foundation means these tools can access the educational context to create content aligned with academic standards from all 50 states, along with the learning components and learning progressions behind each standard.  Instead of recreating basic data infrastructure (and maintaining it), developers can spend more time innovating to create meaningful experiences for educators and students that drive learning.

We are committed to maintaining the resources in Knowledge Graph, adding subjects and learning domains, deepening connections between datasets, and improving alongside the field. Later this year, we will expand access to Knowledge Graph and Evaluators for developers, researchers, and partners — with additional features, integrations, and licensing options to support adoption at scale.
