Use case: If your product only tracks student mastery against academic standards, and a standard is too broad to tell you specifically which learning component within the standard the student has not yet mastered.

Your product tracks student progress against academic standards. But a standard like “analyze and solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations” covers several distinct learning components: (1) understanding what a solution represents graphically, (2) solving the system algebraically, and (3) applying it to a real-world problem. A student who has mastered two of those and is stuck on the third still shows as “not proficient” on the standard as a whole. That tells you the student is struggling, but not specifically where.

Without knowing the nuanced learning components that comprise an academic standard, the only options are to treat the standard as one pass-or-fail unit, or to build your own learning component breakdown by hand for every standard your product covers.
